As in many industries, video game marketing has its share of amazing and terrifying campaigns and marketing strategies. The bad examples may spring to mind, but there are iconic campaigns that are remembered for all the right reasons.

The days of stand-ups are long gone and instead, game companies are using everything from a strategically placed QR code at a major event to movie trailers.

Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto series has been controversial since 1997. In October 2011, Rockstar tweeted a link to an official GTA V website. Soon after, a trailer came out. A second trailer was released in November 2012, followed by a December cover story in Game Informer. In March 2013, murals were made in Manhattan. The campaign used a viral marketing campaign, exclusive pre-order packaging, and carefully positioned billboards and posters. Rockstar reportedly spent $ 265 million developing and marketing the game. When it was released in September 2013, gamers were ready to buy it. The game grossed $ 800 million in just 24 hours. It even broke seven Guinness world records, including the fastest entertainment company with gross profits of $ 1 billion.

When The Sims 2 launched in September 2004, the marketing campaign had already targeted a new demographic for the franchise. EA was aimed at women between the ages of 13 and 34. EA reached out to these women in parts of the internet that weren’t often used for marketing purposes. They attracted 1.5 million users through Yahoo! Messenger alone. The campaign also worked with well-known retail companies by showing their real-world items in-game. These relationships enabled The Sims 2 to release brand extensions like IKEA Home Stuff and H&M Fashion Stuff. Even Katy Perry made a stuff pack. The Sims 2 have sold 20 million copies so far.

Call of Duty: Black Ops sold 5.6 million units in just 24 hours and had sales of $ 1 billion in a month and a half thanks to a clever marketing campaign that featured a zombie-filled viral website and a Call of Duty Chrysler Jeep. Activision unveiled the sequel Black Ops II on TNT in the middle of the 2012 NBA playoffs. The futuristic trailer helped the title set a new record on Amazon pre-orders and was viewed over 32 million times on YouTube. Activision also produced three other videos starring the controversial US military figure Oliver North. The publisher worked with marketing agencies 72andSunny and AntFarm on two short teasers and a full-length film to improve the game. The entire campaign also had a heavy focus on mobile devices and a live-action ad starring Hollywood A-lister Robert Downey Jr., Black Ops II, grossed $ 1 billion in just 15 days.
