Gary Bimonte, co-owner of Pepes Pizza in New Haven, has died – NBC Connecticut

Gary Bimonte, co-owner of the famous Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven, has died, according to his family.

Bimonte died on Wednesday. It is not clear how it passed.

Pepe’s Pizza posted on Facebook that their New Haven location will be closed on Thursday.

“The New Haven location will be closed to all business today, April 8th, as we mourn the death of our brother and friend Gary Bimonte,” the post said.

Bimonte was the grandson of Frank Pepe, who founded the pizzeria on Wooster Street in 1925.

“Gary has been the pride and joy of the Pepe family, and there are no words to express the immense void his death has left in our hearts. He truly loved and cherished our family’s history and was so proud of the legacy that she has left behind over the years, “says the company’s website.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker expressed condolences to the family, which has had a huge impact on local culinary history.

“My condolences go to the family of Gary Bimonte and the family of the Greater Pepe. You are an icon in not only New Haven but the country as well. Your cultural contributions have a lasting impact on the culinary history of our nation. Governor Ned Lamont also spoke about the loss of Bimonte on Twitter.

Our thoughts go with the Bimonte family and everyone at @pepespizzeria how we all mourn her, “he tweeted.

In addition to New Haven, Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana has locations in Danbury, Fairfield, Manchester, West Hartford, Waterbury and Mohegan Sun.

There are three locations in Massachusetts, in Burlington, Chestnut Hill and Watertown.

There is a location in Rhode Island in Warwick.

There is also a location in New York, in Yonkers.
