Danny Sullivan from Google recently discussed the expected effects of the Page Experience Update from May 2021 on the ranking, in which the most important web vitals are integrated as a ranking factor.

Danny commented on the last live chat on the Search Central Live Fireside and later explained a few more on Twitter.

Someone asked a question about the impact the Core Web Vitals will have on the ranking and no one answered at first, but Danny stepped forward and explained what to expect.

The questions:

“Do we expect significant or more subtle effects on the metrics?”

Martin Splitt replied that he did not know.

Then he read on:

“How do you anticipate the impact of the Page Experience Update?”

Martin Splitt broke the silence by pulling out the “it depends” card that led Ashley Berman Hale to joke that she had hoped they could get through the session without it.

Danny Sullivan then responded in a way that reassured publishers and the SEO community not to expect a major disruptive change.


“I think if you go back and see how we got through this kind of thing, that’s really wrong, then everything changes completely the next day.

There is no intention of trying, even though we could say we are using this as a factor. “

Danny next explained why the new ranking factor won’t cause any significant pain, saying that it is just one of many ranking factors and that the goal of ranking relevant websites is the goal of the ranking algorithm.

Danny stated:

“First of all, it remains one of many things.

Second, it is always that we will try to return the best content based on that basket or bucket of things.

You might not have the best page experience … but if you’re still the most relevant piece of content, overall you’ll know about several different things that we’re looking at.

I guess it’s not about getting everything super worried. And understand that we want to make sure this is done moderately …

But over time it will happen that more and more content will show up in the page experience and if you find yourself in a situation where all things are relatively the same, the things that provide more page experience and guidance are likely to perform better.

So it’s not … I don’t think freaking out, but be careful, understand that it’s a new thing to be aware of.

“I said it shouldn’t be that we flip some kind of switch overnight and there is a massive change.

Rollouts of this type (e.g. speed, mobile-friendly) have usually not worked. And also that things are relative … “

“Remember, when the mobile phone friendliness began, there were many more pages that had to be. So while it was a factor, it doesn’t make much sense to use it more as a factor at first. But over time it could (like any other factor) become more valuable … “

Then he added:

With Page Experience, this could become a more important factor over time than a first start, as great Page Experience becomes more common for Pages. But also, and as we have said again and again, this is one of many factors:

Seek community response to Page Experience Update

Michael Martinez (@seo_theorist) commented on a Facebook SEO group:

“Core Web Vitals are not a prerequisite for better rankings. This does not affect the ranking of most websites. That’s not what it is about.

The SEO blogging community has overdone this transition. “

Reading through various social media discussions, the SEO community seems to be equally divided on this issue.

Some people say they take it very seriously, while the other side downplays the ranking factor aspect of Core Web Vitals, encouraging publishers to do their best and nothing more.

There are even some in the community who have speculated that Google is imposing Core Web Vitals on publishers to help Google itself.

The claim is that Google has data showing that it makes more money when users can quickly return to Google from a website.

Regardless of what motives Google has for introducing Core Web Vitals across the Internet, Danny Sullivan does not expect the Page Experience update to lead to massive changes in the ranking.
