New York Occasions: Trump Org finance supervisor subpoenaed in Trump investigation

Citing people with knowledge of the matter, the Times reported that instructions to McConney – the longtime controller of the Trump Organization and one of a small group of officials overseeing the company’s tax affairs – to testify before a state grand jury, on the Bureau’s ongoing investigation into the Trump Organization’s top officer Allen Weisselberg.

The prosecutor’s attorneys are investigating Weisselberg’s role in the Trump organization, his personal finances and the benefits granted to his son, Barry, a longtime associate of the organization. The investigation is part of a criminal investigation into the company, Trump, its executives and the Trump family, people familiar with the investigation previously told CNN. McConney’s subpoena implies a new chapter in the investigation.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. and New York Attorney General Letitia James declined to comment. CNN has approached McConney, Trump Organization attorney Alan Garten, Weisselberg attorney Mary Mulligan, and a Trump Organization spokeswoman for comment and confirmation.

Last week, prosecutors asked at least one witness to prepare to testify before the grand jury, a person familiar with the matter told CNN.

Prosecutors are looking for a lever that could get Weisselberg to work with the authorities, people familiar with the investigation told CNN last month, potentially increasing the legal stakes for Trump and his family. It’s a common tactic used by prosecutors to try to get individuals to “flip around” to build a case higher up the corporate ladder. The Attorney General’s office has initiated criminal tax proceedings against Weißelberg, and the Vance office is coordinating with James’s office on the criminal investigation against Weißelberg.

McConney’s name appeared in a 2019 subpoena issued by Vance’s office to the Trump Organization. His name was listed among those whose communications solicited the subpoena which included “payments or agreements with Michael Cohen or American Media, Inc. relating to Karen McDougal or Stephanie Clifford aka Stormy Daniels aka Peggy Peterson.”
