Restoration Rocket Unveils Native web optimization Case Research of Pretend Google My Enterprise Listings – Free On-line Information Launch Press Launch

New York, NY, USA, 07/14/2021 / v /

Restoration Rocket conducted a local SEO case study to identify common traits in Google My Business (GMB) spam lists. The study is a continuation of the famous article published by the Wall Street Journal on the same subject. Restoration Rocket reviewed thousands of listings in 34 markets. As part of their SEO research, they have helped many real-life restaurant companies by reporting hundreds of fake Google My Business listings.

Readers should note that this study was not conducted to quantify how many listings were counterfeit, but to find the similarities within the listings that were confirmed to be counterfeit. Google My Business spam arises when companies try to gain an advantage over their competitors through unfavorable practices under false names and addresses.

The study targeted fake Google My Business listings rather than actual business owners trying to climb the SEO ladder and appear at the top of searches. Ultimately, Restoration Rocket wants to instill confidence that real businesses can fight the problem, show SEO companies the common attributes of spammy GMB records, and finally show bad actors that their fake businesses are being cleaned up. Restoration Rocket analyzed dozens of factors like number of reviews, average rating, years in business, etc.

The team delved into 34 markets across the United States. The research started with a Google search using the same search term for each market. “Market + Disaster Restoration Company.” Each search result was then manually reviewed. Restoration Rocket was patient in noticing anything that looked suspicious. 250 fake Google My Business entries were identified and acted simultaneously. Restoration Rocket tested the correction process via Google Maps by executing “Suggest a change”, “Close or remove” or “Not available here” and repeating this process consistently.

To make sure they weren’t ruining legitimate businesses, Restoration Rocket did the search manually instead of using an algorithm or system. To further verify a company’s legitimacy, they performed a company and company search on the respective state’s database before taking any action. If the company wasn’t registered or enrolled with the state, it was fair game to be considered for the study.

Within 10 days of reporting companies as spam, Google published 132 changes, killing 52% of fake companies. The remaining 118 entries were processed with the Google Business Redressal Complaint Form using a single table. After waiting 3 weeks, Restoration Rocket went back to check each of the above entries to determine that Google removed another 69 fake entries. Of the original 250 Google My Business profiles, only 45 remained at the end of the project.

The study found several intriguing facts highlighting company name use, listing rating, number of ratings, listing age, and website presence.

The highlights include:

  • According to Google, fake entries were in business for an average of 3 years!

  • Fake offers had an average of 6 ratings!

  • 35% of fake offers had a 5-star rating!
