These corporations launch Juneteenth for his or her staff

Amid the wave of discussions about racial injustice that gained momentum last summer, companies like Allstate, Google, and Nike announced last year that they would recognize June th as a paid holiday for their employees.

Following the passage of the Senate and House of Representatives earlier this week, the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was enacted Thursday by President Joe Biden, making it the 11th statutory federal holiday along with Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Martin Luther King Jr.Day.

The day celebrates the belated news that President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, freeing “all persons held as slaves” in the United States. However, it was not until June 19, 1865 – more informally known as Juneteenth – that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom when Union soldiers arrived.

Employees say their companies fail to keep the promises they made about racial justice

The Juneteenth has been celebrated by African Americans for generations since that day. But it wasn’t until after George Floyd’s assassination in 2020 that companies started celebrating the holiday among their employees.

According to HellaCreative, a Black Creative Initiative in San Francisco to make Juneteenth a public holiday, more than 460 companies are currently celebrating Juneteenth, and many are offering a paid day off or vacation pay.

Including Gannett, the parent company of USA TODAY and the USA TODAY Network.

Here are some other companies that are continuing PTO (Paid Time Off) this year and some that have started over:

T-Mobile

The mobile phone company has made the Juneteenth paid company vacation for the first time this year.

“It is the result of the great feedback from our employees about what T-Mobile can do to create positive change inside and outside our walls,” said Mike Sievert, CEO, USA TODAY.

Howl

This is the first year the Review app has made Juneteenth a paid holiday. The company said it would honor the holiday on Friday, June 18.

“Myself and other Yelp executives have conducted a series of listening sessions to hear from our black employees and discover the areas where we can and need to get better. From those conversations, we realized the importance of giving our employees the space to celebrate Juneteenth as the world’s paid holiday, ”said Miriam Warren, Yelp Chief Diversity Officer, in a statement.

The company has scheduled internal events for its employees to celebrate and honor the importance of June 10th.

Home depot

The company has a number of events and celebrations planned for its employees and will host a virtual event for all employees to come together and speak openly, a spokesman told USA TODAY.

Starbucks

The world’s most popular coffee chain has made Juneteenth 2020 a public holiday and pays hourly employees for a time and a half. Employees who are required to work will get a vacation in compensation, and support partners will get the day off on a regular salary, the company said in an email.

“This was one of many steps we have taken to foster an environment where our partners can see and feel real progress,” said Dennis Brockman, Starbucks global chief inclusion and diversity officer, in a statement.

Elevator

The ridesharing company gives employees a day off for the second year in a row.

“We encourage team members to use this day to reflect, engage in civic engagement or use anti-discrimination resources to deepen understanding of the work that is still needed to support the black community,” the company shared in one Email with.

Lyft executives will also be participating in roundtable discussions on Juneteenth, Votes, Rights, Allies and more later this week. Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of NAACP, and Melanie Campbell, President and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, will be in attendance.

Zillow

Zillow expanded its vacation calendar in 2020 when it added Juniteenth as a paid holiday for all of its employees.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to racial equality, Zillow is celebrating June thenth as a paid holiday and encouraging staff to use the day for reflection, volunteering, education, and activism to mark the end of slavery in the United States,” said Kristina Adamski, vice president von Zillo said in a statement.

Altria

The tobacco company Altria announced in 2020 that it would celebrate June 10th as “Healing Day” to further support its black employees.

“We made June teenth a company-paid day off last year and we will be doing it again this year,” Steven Callahan, Altria’s managing director of communications, told USA Today.

The company will recognize it on Friday June 18.

Nike

The

Nike made the juneteenth a paid annual vacation for its employees in both the United States and Puerto Rico last year.

“Across our Nike, Converse and Jordan families, we will be closing our corporate, retail, manufacturing and sales activities in compliance with Juniteenth to provide educational opportunities that honor black history and culture,” said a Nike -Spokeswoman for USA TODAY.

The company’s offices and distribution centers will be closed on Friday June 18, while Nike and Converse retail stores will be closed on Saturday June 19.

MasterCard

The financial services group made the Juneteenth the “Mastercard Day of Solidarity” for its employees last year. The same will happen in 2021.

“We continue to offer our employees worldwide the day for service, study or reflection,” said Will O’Connor, Senior Vice President of Communications at Mastercard, to USA TODAY.

June 10th will be observed on Friday June 18th and Thursday June 17th for countries that do not work on Fridays.

Best buy

Juneteenth is an official company holiday at Best Buy that was announced last year. The company’s offices will be closed on June 18 and company employees will be given a paid day off. Hourly workers who work full or part time are given one and a half hours.

“It is very important to us to recognize its importance to our employees and to give them the opportunity to celebrate, reflect or give something back,” said Mark Irvin, Chief Inclusion, Diversity and Talent Officer at BestBuy, in an email .

The company also provides resources and information about local community-led celebrations, juneteenth educational resources, and volunteering.

The global retail giant made Juneteenth an official annual company holiday in 2020.

“In 2021, Target will do the same by giving team members the opportunity to watch the day at will through education, service or partying,” the company said in a statement.

Employees who work hourly are paid one and a half hours.

Allstate

The insurance company followed suit, making Juneteenth an annual paid company vacation in 2020. This will give employees “an opportunity to reflect, learn and get involved in their communities in their communities,” Allstate spokesman Mallory Vasquez said in an email.

The company will honor the holiday on Friday June 18.
